attention

People are amazed that Grace, my beagle, rarely barks. Beagles are infamous for being loud and constant barkers. In fact, when I Googled the subject, here are the most often asked questions on the topic:

  • Do beagles bark more than other dogs?
  • Do beagles ever stop barking?
  • How do I get my beagle to stop barking?
  • Are beagles really noisy?

Yaa, I think we get the point; most beagles make a lot of noise. I’ve included a link that lets you listen to the three types of beagle sounds.

It’s not that Grace can’t bark; she just hasn’t barked often in the two years since we adopted her. But recently, there is one behavior of her owners that will set her off: being on our phones or laptops for too long.

The link below titled “Grace Vying for Attention” is an example. If I’m reading an article on my phone and she thinks I’ve spent enough time on that, she lets me know. Grace doesn’t softly whine (as in “can you please pay a bit of attention to me”) but rather she jumps forward while barking (as in “Hey, lady! Put that electronic thing down NOW!”)

I was reminded of my dog’s odd behavior when I recently watched a 7-year-old TED speaker. That is not a typo. Molly Wright, age 7, gave a TED talk last month on the subject of brain science and the importance of paying attention to our children, especially from birth to five years.

I’ve included her 7-minute talk below and encourage you to watch it. Shut down everything else on your phone or computer and pay attention to how the audience receives Molly’s message. Watch the empathy this child has for less fortunate children. And then share this message that the world needs to hear.
